It's always useful to have a wide range of tools in your horse training tool belt. This young mare uses an aggressive behavior to create distance between her and humans when she feels insecure or threatened. I expose her to a very small experience that triggers her response to my presence. Then I give her time to see if she's able to self-regulate and dial it down a smidge. Conditioned Approach can work well in some situations but it can be a challenge to apply correctly. It takes skill and timing. CAT is only one method we're using to rehabilitate this sweet girl. We're also going a LOT of counter conditioning which has been most effective. Every once in a while though, there will be an opportunity to use CAT, mostly because we aren't wearing a treat pouch at that moment. Always remember to be safe and watch for the smallest signs your horse is getting upset or heading in the wrong direction behaviorally in any way. Seek the help of a behavioral expert.
